How to deal with grief after a suicide

Suicide grief often includes shock, unanswered questions, guilt, anger, and isolation. That does not mean you are weak or unfaithful — it means you loved someone and the loss is complex. Helpful steps many survivors use:

  • Name the loss honestly without graphic detail. You can say “died by suicide.”
  • Release false blame. Suicide is almost never one simple cause. You are not solely responsible for someone else’s death.
  • Seek specialized support — counseling, a survivor-of-suicide-loss group, a trusted chaplain or pastor, and peer communities.
  • Tend the basics — sleep, food, one safe person who will sit with you without fixing you.
  • Protect children with age-appropriate truth (use the handouts below). Avoid “went to sleep” language.
  • Watch for your own crisis signs. Survivors can become suicidal too. Call or text 988 anytime.

Scripture does not rush mourners. God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Lament is allowed. Hope is not pretending the pain is small — it is knowing help exists and you do not have to carry this alone.

Talking with kids after a suicide

Children and teens need clear words, reassurance that it is not their fault, and adults who will answer questions without method details. Use the age-banded PDFs below the same way you use the general grief set: print, share with caregivers, and keep 988 visible.
